Unlike traditional acupuncture which selects points along a meridian, medical acupuncture targets neuro anatomical structures, whether it be muscles, ligaments or nerves that are the underlying cause of pain. After a focused assessment and evaluation determining the structures causing the pain, thin sterile are inserted into specific targeted sites. There can be from a few needles upto 15 needles and they are usually left in place for 15-20 minutes. Different needling strategies are used for acute and chronic conditions and may often include the use of electrical stimulation to the needles to enhance the treatment effect. Treatments are often incorporated with chiropractic treatment which may include soft tissue therapy, spinal manipulation and corrective exercise.
